We spent two full days and two partial days in the tiny town of Grundsund, where my father was born and raised before he emigrated to America along with two of his brothers John (Johannes) and Oscar. Grundsund is located near the Black Sea coast near Sweden/Norway border in the superannuated (no longer official) province known as Bohuslän (pr. “bo-hoos-len). This was destination number one for me personally because of family ties to this place.
- Visiting Grundsund: First Day. I can’t believe we did so many things the first day; the first 1/3 day, really, taking into account the travel time from Stockholm.
- Visiting Grundsund: Second Day. The second day we made a wonderful tour of the seascape surrounding Grundsund, thanks to my cousin Anders Krögén, son of Ann-Marie. Anders sure knew his way around these treacherous waters; there could be an underwater boulder anywhere just waiting for somebody’s boat to bash into.
- Visiting Grundsund: Third Day. Today started off with a visit to the family gravesites (two cemeteries) and Grundsunds Kyrka (church of Grundsund), followed by a visit to Abrahamssons hemet, the Abrahamson home where my father was born and raised. We finished with a grand gathering of our travel party and the many relatives nearby at the home of Anders and Lena.
- Visiting Grundsund: Fourth Day. The final day in Grundsund was really a half day because we needed to prep for our return trip to Stockholm. But such a morning it was: we were at once sorry to be leaving but then joyful at the wonderful time we had.
